Ubiquinone, also known as coenzyme Q10, is present in almost all human tissue. It is crucial to the energy production of cells. Ubiquinone is fat-soluble, and it transforms into ubiquinol in the body, functioning as an antioxidant in the cells. In terms of structure, it resembles vitamin K. Because the body can produce ubiquinone, however, it is not considered to be a vitamin. The highest concentrations of ubiquinone are found in heart, liver, muscle, and kidney tissue. It is also present in LDL and HDL cholesterol in the blood. The body produces ubiquinone, but its production decreases with age.

We get small amounts of ubiquinone from meat, offal, soybean oil, peanuts, and sardines.

When should ubiquinone be measured?

Ubiquinone should be measured when suspecting insufficient intake.

What does a ubiquinone test measure?

The test measures the level of ubiquinone in the blood. The level is at its highest around the age of 20, after which the body’s ubiquinone production decreases.

Normally, the result is:

Reference values:

  • over 16 y: 0,42-2,50 µmol/l

The reference values of this examination have changed 11.10.2021. You will find your own result's reference values from My LOUNA in touch with the graph. Read more about defining reference values.

Please contact your physician or other healthcare professional if you suspect an illness or need help interpreting the results.

The levels can increase as a result of taking nutritional supplements with high amounts of ubiquinone. Excessive intake of ubiquinone is rare.

Medicines and diseases can cause low ubiquinone levels. Patients with heart diseases normally have lower levels of ubiquinone in the blood and heart muscle.

Preparation

Fasting is required

Diabeetikot noudattavat lääkäriltä saamaansa ohjeistusta paaston suhteen.
